The former naval hospital in Bighi was yesterday given a permit to be transformed into a national interactive science and technology centre.

The aim of the project, which was approved by the planning board, is to offer a better understanding of science to schoolchildren through hands-on activities and interaction.

The project will be headed by Malta Council for Science and Technology CEO Nicho-las Sammut.

He said the project was “an excellent example of a merger between our cultural heritage, that deserves profound respect, and futuristic science, which we need to instil into our younger generations”.

Meanwhile, the board also approved the restoration of Fort Manoel. The extensive works include the restoration of the ditch, glacis and outer-works of the northern end of the fort.

All the interventions were described as sensitive to the cultural and historic values of the site.

Constructed in 1723, Fort Manoel is strategically located on Manoel Island and geographically protects the interior part of Marsamxett Harbour. The fort continued to be used and developed over the years by the Knights and later by the British Forces.
