Box office records slower summer after cinema audiences were lured away by other entertainment, such as coverage of Euro 2012 and the Olympic Games

Fifteen blockbusters are among 39 films, including 10 in 3D format, being released by KRS until Christmas.

The films come hot on the heels of a good summer of releases. However, there was a drop in attendance, which KRS managing director Charles Pace attributed to a number of factors, especially major sports events such as Euro 2012 and the Olympics.

Despite the decline, five films topped the weekly box office charts. The 10 most popular films this summer were The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man, Ted, Ice-Age 4: Continental Drift, Brave, Snow White and the Hunstman, Step Up 4: Miami Heat, The Expendables 2, The Dictator and Marvel’s Avengers Assemble.

The latest line-up began on Wednesday with Joe Wright’s drama Anna Karenina starring Keira Knightley and Jude Law.

The films Taken 2, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, Daniel Craig’s third mission as secret agent 007 in Skyfall and the crime drama thriller Savages are expected to place well in the box office charts.

November sees the release of comedy The Big Wedding, starring Robert de Niro and Diane Keaton, the conclusion of adventure fantasy drama The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones star in the romantic comedy drama Hope Springs and Russell Crowe appears in The Man With The Iron Fists.

The most-awaited film of the year – The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – will hit screens in December.

Other movies to be released that month include Peter Ramsey’s animated adventure comedy Rise of the Guardians, Ang Lee’s Life of Pi and Christopher McQuarrie’s crime thriller Jack Reacher.
