Vodafone Malta made the new nano SIM cards available earlier this week, ready for the arrival of devices like Apple’s iPhone 5. Vodafone is the official communications partner for Apple in Malta but there is still no word on the official availability of the iPhone 5 locally.

The nano SIM measures just 12.3 x 8.8 mm and a mere 0.7 mm thick, making it about 30 per cent smaller than the micro SIM.

Vodafone said the nano SIM will still be delivered in an ID-1 frame, just like most plug-in and micro SIM cards yet it is unique in thickness which means that it cannot be cut down to size from a micro SIM. We were was able to test the new nano SIM on an older iPhone and it worked perfectly.

Some consumers have already bought the iPhone 5 from overseas and even tried to cut down a micro SIM to fit the nano SIM size.
