3,000 graves to be built, sold at Addolorata

Video: Jason Borg

The government is to build and sell 3,000 graves at the Addolorata Cemetery and another 76 at the cemetery in Mellieha, Health Minister Joseph Cassar said today. They will be sold at  €5,000 each.

There is a list of 6,000 waiting to buy a grave, with 5,000 seeking a grave at the Addolorata. The oldest application is 20 years old.

Dr Cassar said that those on the waiting list will receive a letter in the coming days asking them to confirm their interest and to come forward for a promise of sale agreement.

The call for tenders for the building of the graves closes next week.

The government is also planning development of St Anthony Cemetery, near Mdina.

The price of the graves announced today is lower than a figure revealed by Dr Cassar himself last October.

He had said in reply to a parliamentary question that the real cost of a new grave was €8,000.

I agree and at 5'4 and 1/2 inches I would only need a little hole anyway!!! Irather send 8,000 euros on a party around my bedside with family and friends not give it to politicians.

The semi rotted remains are taken out after two years in public graves and disjointed with a spade and burnt in a pit or a metal skip to reduce them to a compact size for dumping in the over filled fossa that is used as a charnel house.

I'm sure there are many who feel the same, perhaps the Times could conduct a survey on line.

I for one would certainly vote in favour.

Not necassrily. You could end up as ashes in a nice jar or in a beautiful casket on the mantlepiece (I have seen this with my own eyes).

I am afraid it is more like they are expecting a large number of deaths from heart attacks after the next elections.
