3,000 graves to be built, sold at Addolorata
Video: Jason Borg
The government is to build and sell 3,000 graves at the Addolorata Cemetery and another 76 at the cemetery in Mellieha, Health Minister Joseph Cassar said today. They will be sold at €5,000 each.
There is a list of 6,000 waiting to buy a grave, with 5,000 seeking a grave at the Addolorata. The oldest application is 20 years old.
Dr Cassar said that those on the waiting list will receive a letter in the coming days asking them to confirm their interest and to come forward for a promise of sale agreement.
The call for tenders for the building of the graves closes next week.
The government is also planning development of St Anthony Cemetery, near Mdina.
The price of the graves announced today is lower than a figure revealed by Dr Cassar himself last October.
He had said in reply to a parliamentary question that the real cost of a new grave was €8,000.

And when is cremation going to be legalised in Malta?? So I have to die here, be transported abroad then brought back as ashes? At what cost and practicality?? I have a family grave but don't ever wish to end up there. I would rather be cremated and have my ashes either kept by loved ones in a casket or thrown over the sea around malta.

At such a price I'd dig it myself with a toy shovel - if not bare handed! And oh, speaking of holes, I recon we got quite a few in our roads; why not use people's remains to fill them up and reduce materials costs? Tenders are open for carcass aquisitions...

The real cost of a new grave was 8000 euro the Minister said, are they going to be built with granite Mr Minister. It is the simpliest thing to build, unless the Mepa permit is very expensive. Somebody must be already counting the cash he will make on this. Dr Debono what is your opinion on this please.

What a bunch of macaroni. You cannot afford to die in peace anymore. What happens to people who cannot afford the price of €5,000 for a burial site? Maybe bury them in a field someplace? Get over it people. It is about time this country recognizes cremation. It is very cost effective and even the poor might be able to afford to die in peace. I would like for my ashes to be spread on the waters between Malta and Kemmuna. I hope that is not too much to ask, besides I am claustrophobic and don't like closed places, besides I cannot imagine all those ants feasting on my body. So in other words if you want to purchase two plots for your Mum and Dad it will cost you a nice €10,000 euros? And that is if you are one of the chosen. How ridiculous, having to stand in line to be buried properly. money talks and bullshit walks. It seems that the more we progress the more we regress. I will die before I will let them lower me into any grave. Just a bit of humour, get it?

To make life easy for every one ,we should not thing what is going to happen to our lifeless body.Thats should be free to every one, like they use to do 100 years ago.Business on graves which is very strong ,6000euros x 5000 graves=30,000000euros well is death going to make business such a best thing?

World wide people are able to buy plots for burial for themselves and their love ones. It's their perogative. Really said for those anti cemetaries who are expanding. Same thing happenend with the beautiful and monumental Nadur Cemetary. The vast majority of people of Nadur were in favor of this project except a few people.

Why does it cost 8,000 euros to build a grave (which seems to me to be the simplest of structures as its only a hole in the ground)?
And why can't we have a crematorium? We should have the right to choose between burial and cremation.

How many graves are no longer being used just because extended families prefer their own and dont want their bones mingled with those of their grandparents and parents ? Graves can be opened and reused after 2 years. Bones are collected and put to one side , so what's the whole fuss .....just to say one has his or her grave.
We die.....we become dust...maybe a photo will remain or a plaque. thats all.

The semi rotted remains are taken out after two years in public graves and disjointed with a spade and burnt in a pit or a metal skip to reduce them to a compact size for dumping in the over filled fossa that is used as a charnel house.

When are we going to have a Crematorium? There are those of us like all my family who would prefare to be cremated than buried in the ground. Its is cheaper, cleaner, healthier and does not take any space.

Re- introduce cremation on the Maltese Islands. I say re-introduce as there is archaeological evidence of this practice by our forefathers!
And for those who want to rot away underground underground - simply recycle the old graves!
In any case once a grave is full, it is usually cleaned out prior to the next burial with the bones and remaining matter being removed anyway. Not so final a resting place is it?
Is it a case of there being just too much money in the whole funerary business for anyone to even consider upsetting the present status quo by even mentioning a crematorium???

The timing says it all. Who is to blame the reader for taking this as a hasty election mode promise, one which would only meet 50% of the present demand, were it to be carried out. The figures speak out for themselves: an offer to build 3000 graves, with a waiting-list of 5000 applications at the Addolorata graveyard alone, and counting. And does this mean that taxpayers (including those on waiting lists for graves, to add insult to injury) will have to fork out 3000 euros shortfall per grave (8,000 less 5,000 to be paid by the buyer) as stated in the projected cost of each new grave? And who knows how much the *real* cost will work out to be? This would mean a public subsidy of at least 9 million euros! We are living in 2012. It is about time the authorities in Malta face their humanitarian and social obligations and allow the option of a crematorium facility. The right to choose one's form of burial should be regarded as a final and inviolable human right. And this on tiny Malta where land is available at such a premium, and where the enlargement of cemeteries inevitably has major environmental impact, just to mention one aspect: this 300-sq km rock must be one of the few places in the civilized world obstinately denying a basic and clean alternative to inhumation to their people.
