It is nothing and it is everything; it is what is and what could be. It is a performance set between worlds and lives, where heaven and earth, life and death are interpreted in dance.

Renowned dancer and choreographer Mavin Khoo has brought his concept of physical motion to our shores in a production called Akasha, which saw its birth at the Manoel Theatre five years ago.

It was during a performance at the same theatre that Mr Khoo became aware of a sense of “intangible energies coming together”.

Half a decade later, the Manoel Theatre is welcoming a production where five artists seem to “collide in the in-between of a vacuum”.

Akasha in Sanskrit means “ether”, both in its elemental and metaphysical sense.

Researched and developed in Malta, the work includes an international company of performers and artistic collaborators from the UK, Malaysia and Malta under Mr Khoo’s direction.

Performed under a circle of light, the five performers (five energies) are between worlds: earth and heaven, mortality and immortality.

Renzo Spiteri has created a soundscape through which the performers – Mr Khoo accompanied by Sarah-Lee Zammit, Dorian Mallia, Jacob Piccinino and Florinda Camilleri – come together to the vocal accompaniment of UK-based singer Pushkala Gopal.

With the support of the British Council and sponsorship from the Asian company Paradigm Wellness, the performance premiered in Malta yesterday and is on again today at the Manoel.

It will then travel to Singapore.
