Kilo of explosive material found under pick-up in Fgura
Bomb hoax at the law courts
Updated: Army bomb disposal experts are examining a kilo of explosive material found in a package under a pick-up van in Fgura this morning. A mobile phone was also found in the package.
Neighbours reported to the vehicle owner that unknown people were seen placing the package under the vehicle in December 14, 1945 Road at about 8 a.m.
Soldiers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit fired a powerful bomb-disposal water jet into the package and then gently removed it and dismantled it. It was taken away for further examination.
The police are examining CCTV footage. One of the suspected men is reportedly identifiable.
The area was closed off while the operation was in progress.
Meanwhile, a bomb warning was also made to the law courts in mid-morning, forcing the evacuation of the building while checks were made.

Victor Scicluna and Fred Sammut, Mr. D. Quaid has a point. I was a firefighter in the RAF (Malta) and I faced danger nearly everyday, but as Mr. Quaid said, that was a job which I chose to do and paid for. It doesn't mean we don't appreciate what the army, police, CPD etc. do. Of course we do!

Gently put and I agree too. Another thing - Shouldn' t they have had the other cars around removed first. Less metal to fly around if the bomb did explode. We do appreciate what they do nonetheless.

Whoever this bomb was aimed at, should thank his VERY lucky stars and nosy neighbours.
Well done AFM.

YES, YES, great work , guys.
BUT, after all it's a JOB. Army, police, Civil service, etc. they are doing it , because it's a job and paid for and not because they are heros.
I totally agree that they are needed, but they have chosen to do that job and they should be paid for the risk. I won't call them heros. For me heros are people you do something volunteer without being paid for.

you seem you did never needed there service.......
go and tell this to a kid who s father was blown away doing his job removing a bomb from under a car who may be has a bit of respect more than you have for these common jobs people....
Dennis Quaid

Fred, I didn't say that I do not have respect of their job. What I said is that it is just a job, although a dangerous job, but they chose it and they getting paid.
I also have respect for people who clear the rubbish every day in front of my house, to the doctors how safe a life in hospital, to teachers dealing with kids at school, ..... BUT at the end its their JOB, but I don't see them at heros
Victor Scicluna
Oct 2nd 2012, 16:15
Why don`t you try and do this job yourself. You think they get paid well for what they do? For me who risks his life for the benefit of others even if he gets paid is a hero.

Everybody has the right for his own opinion but, Sorry, what a stupid comment !
Volunteer or not, these are our heroes.
It is not just a job, it;s true that they are paid for this but, at the end of the day, they also volunteered to do it whereas others stay away, these heroes have to go in danger to protect others, even though they know they are risking their own lives at the detriment of their own family.
Their families are also heroes because they have to endure all the pressure and stress resulting from their loved ones' work.
To make it even worse, reading such comments surely leaves negative effects. I know exactly what I mean.
To all Police, Army, Civil protection, Ambulance people and any other emergency response people, both regular and also volunteers AND TO THEIR FAMILIES - RESPECT AND APPRECIATION.

Thank you very much Dennis for appreciating our work. I'm pretty sure your job sucks and pretty sure you do too. This work requires guts, and surely you don't have. Although this job is paid for I can tell you one thing, it's not enough.
We risk our lives doing crazy things so we can protect our country and her people and sadly some just like you. So don't go saying that's it's just our job, cause 99% of the majority wouldn't do this for €1,000,000!!

"Meanwhile, a bomb warning was also made to the law courts in mid-morning, forcing the evacuation of the building while checks were made."
This looks like it is linked so the bomb disposal experts would be checking the courts, deviating them from the real bomb!
Well done to you all for being alert!

True it is becoming dangerous , and the POLICE AND THE A.F.M. are doing a great job. We should each and every one of us show our support ! They should also be well trained in martial arts and if possible all carry a firearm . THEY HAVE TO DO THEIR JOB AND THEY HAVE FAMILIES TOO !

I agree with all of you. Well done to tha AFM and the Police. They are doing a very good job.
One of the things that I would like to see is an improvement in how they deal with the public.Their perception is that everyone is a criminal and there is now difference in how they approach different citizens.

"Meanwhile, a bomb warning was also made to the law courts in mid-morning, forcing the evacuation of the building while checks were made."
Has it ever occurred to the authorities that, if someone wanted to harm the people in the court, the best thing to do is plant a bomb in front of the law courts and then phone them to say there's a bomb inside and wait for everyone to be herded out to the front of the courts?

Along with AFM, CPD and the police force, for which all are jobs paid for, we should mention the Emergency Fire and Rescue Unit - EFRU and Spiders which both are formed of a group of dedicated volountary people who risk their lives to help us. Both of theae groups should be mentioned more often as awearness of such groups is still low in public. Many thanks to the volountary workers within EFRU and Spiders

There you are, you the ones that assault the Police, Army, Civil Protection etc. There THEY are, risking their lives, or limbs, to save humans. OK, so some may say, 'It's their job' , but what if no one takes up any of these jobs ? Good LUCK TO YOU ALL, and Thank you for the many dangerous jobs you do carry out. Well done.
