Despite the absence of the Red Arrows, more people turned up at this year’s edition of the Malta International Airshow than last year, according to organiser Joe Ciliberti.

Although he did not as yet have the numbers in hand, he said indications were that this year’s turnout was stronger.

The 2012 edition of the popular airshow was dampened by the fact that the eagerly awaited Red Arrows were forced to cancel their appearance. Six of the jets developed problems with their oxygen systems, making it difficult for the pilots to breathe, and they were grounded in Sardinia for repairs.

Enthusiasts were of course disappointed that the famous RAF aerobatic team failed to make the show. Extra displays were added to the Sunday programme to make up for its absence.

However, some patrons complained on timesofmalta.com, it was not fair that the Sunday show was better than the Saturday one. Some said they paid €12 for their tickets to see the Red Arrows and should be refunded.

Mr Ciliberti said no one had formally asked for a refund. The tickets, which could be bought ahead or on the day, clearly stated that last-minute changes could be made to the programme, he added.

He also said the organisers kept the public informed as soon as they knew that the Red Arrows would not make it, which was something beyond their control.

During the show, spectators got their first look at Air Malta’s new aircraft livery. The highlight was an aerial display by a World War II Spitfire.

The airshow also featured RAF Typhoons and Tornados, a Nato AWACS, a Hercules and a Libyan Air Force Chinook helicopter.
