Prisoners' protest for missing Winter Moods concert
Updated 3.45 p.m.
Fourteen prison inmates who swallowed razor blades yesterday after not being allowed to attend a Winter Moods concert in the prison courtyard are now back in their cells.
In a statement, the Director of Prisons said that during the summer, the prisons administration held a string of cultural events inside the correctional facility. The last of these events was the one held yesterday.
For reasons of security, the event was open only for those inmates housed in the divisions which were closest to the yard. Inmates who presented a security risk were not allowed to attend.
The event itself was uneventful. However, a group of prisoners who were not able to attend 'allegedly' swallowed shaving blades covered in adhesive tape as a sign of protest.
All 14 prisoners were medically examined by the doctor on duty at the CCF and referred to Mater Dei Hospital for further investigation.
They have now been taken back to prison and do not require further treatment.

I agree with Andreas Bone & Mic Scapello..
........It is a big punishment to be locked up & not face life......The last thing we want is them resorting to learning new tricks when they come out- Concerts and other incentives that make them realize what they are missing outside, is great!
Remember that most criminals never make it behind bars anyways.
Those are the ones you should be worried about!

This event makes it absolutely pointless to be living "the free Life". we pay for our taxes, we pay for concerts, we pay for doctor visits, we pay for patrol, we pay to use private football grounds etc etc. and these supposed inmates, who are send to prison because they have broke the law what do they get? A pitch with synthetic turf with a private coach, a menu for there daily meals, internet, a room with a television, a free doctor, transport if they need to be moved and lets not forget a private concert by Winter Moods!!!! Please could you indicate me the way for the reception Please?

Re "the way for reception"..... it seems to be somewhat difficult going by the number of lenient and "suspended" sentences dished out by the courts! Those that have managed to access the privileges must be truly proud of themselves that they have made it to the life of luxury!

Listen everyone, we're not the only place in the universe where concerts are organized for inmates, so no need for the hard on!, ever heard of Johhny Cash playing in a U.S. state prison?, these kind of events are organized in state & federal prisons all over the U.S. for inmates that make ours look like easter bunnies. These events are also very present in many european countries, so much for your so called christian love & compassion you all brag about, you should be ashamed of yourselves!

I personally do not see anything wrong with having events for prisoners. Prison shouldn't be a place reserved just for harsh punishments, but a place for rehabilitation. Making anyone lose touch with society is never a way forward. Any after all, it wouldn't really make a difference to anyone else if they had concerts or not, since concerts (free or otherwise) in prison and concerts out of prison walls are not mutually exclusive.

Is this report a joke? Please tell me it is just some one winding us up.Please tell me that its not true that my my hard earned money, paid to the government as taxes does not go to pay for concerts inside the prison,to entertain people who have committed acts against society. Will someone please explain ?

Well, according to most comments below, prisoners should be tied up in chains in dark, damp and dank cells. But seriously folks, all kidding aside, it is not uncommon for prisons to provide this sort of entertainment, once in a while. Just because one's in prison doesn't make him/her less human. Chill.

Is this for real? I have to pay to go and listen to a concert and the prisoners get it fot free?
No wonder they call it the Corradino Hilton, with live entertainment as part of the 'All Inclusive" board basis!

things to be done
1. Confine them to soundproof cells & play a continuous tape loop of Winter Moods 24/7 for 3mths.
2. Calculate the hospitalization costs & make them work to pay it off.
3. Employ a barber, or better still…
4. Allow razor blades but no tape.

I can't imagine the situation in the A&E Department at MDH when these prisoners were taken there. When a prisoner is present there will be about 2-3 guards with him/her, rightly so.. let alone 15 of them.

So these guys who are supposed to be locked up as a punishment and to rehabilitate themselves get to see a Winter Moods concert for free while the honest citizen has to pay for it! Sometimes I wonder: Does it pay to be a criminal on this mickey mouse island?

This is because the courts prefer to appease the prisoners instead of protecting their victims.
In Malta the culture is to be very lenient with criminals hoping they will reform, but many are career criminals with no desire to change under any circumstances - so the public is always under threat from the career criminals in Malta.
Dr DeBono exposed the ramshackle state of the Malta courts, which still operate in the same way as they did 150 years ago - what a disgrace.

My O my, so it's a must for a prisoner to see a concert, if not they will go into a tantrum and swallow blades. Are they prisoners or spoil rotten inmates. Something has to be done, doesn't seem that discipline is so enforced inside our prisons.

I cannot see who the prisoners really are - if the ones behind the bars or the ones outside trying to live life.. going from work to work and paying taxes while prisoners are being entertained with winter moods concert!
I guess life behind the bars isn't that cruel as it seems from the outside...
