I attended the Labour Party’s mass meeting at Ta’ Qali on September 22, which was the culmination of the party’s first ever congress. I have to say I was not disappointed. The whole affair was organised efficiently and with flair and everything went smoothly.

What really pleased me and evidently also the thousands of supporters was Joseph Muscat’s speech.

Delivered with passion and eloquence, it was well thought yet very straightforward. Echoing the congress’ motto, which will remain a keynote throughout the party’s campaign, the leader emphasised his and his colleagues’ focus on a future that unites, rather than divides, our country.

I cannot agree more with Muscat that the tribal mentality that has afflicted us for so long must cease; it is not only senseless but has also caused great harm to our nation.

The PL has always been a staunch supporter of meritocracy. Muscat added on to this by declaring that, through a sound education, people would never have to plead to politicians for jobs again. It is high time the Government realised it is there for the people, not the other way round.

I could analyse all of Muscat’s latest statements, which included not only education but also fairer civil liberties, sustainable social benefits, reforms in the health sector and so on, but that is not my point.

My point is that at the mass meeting, the Opposition Leader showed that he and his party are not afraid to stand up and be counted.

This party means business and I am sure this will become clear to most as time passes by.
