It’s been a good season for Shakespeare, with no less than three related productions hitting our stages over the past weeks. Now, the Bard is back with this season’s second Romeo and Juliet adaptation, with the world’s most famous lovers being transferred by Theatrencore from Verona to Malta in the mid-1980s.

The production will see the young lovers’ tragedy set against the violent tension that reigned in the political struggle between Malta’s main political parties, the Labourites and the Nationalists.

Braving the waving flags of both parties, Romeo (Philip Leone-Ganado) and Juliet (Sharon Bezzina) endeavour to make their love come true.

Expect lots of pop culture references relating to the era, from tear gas, to Pacman, Grundig televisions, the chocolate bar Catch, Wham, Dallas, Dynasty, and the punk subculture set as the backdrop for a play that claims that “never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo”.

Basing the production on the Shakesperean text, Romeo and Juliet is directed by Tyrone Grima, and includes Colin Willis, Erin Stewart Tanti, Nadine Genovese, David Chircop, Alex Gatsey, Pauline Fenech, Marvic Cordina, Joe Pace and Marco Calleja as cast.

The play, co-produced with St James Cavalier, is being staged at the Centre for Creativity on October 12, 13 and 14 at 8pm. Tickets are available from the St James Cavalier box office or online.
