Senglea trees need to be removed for road alignment - ministry
Old trees to be replanted a few metres away
Updated: The Infrastructure Ministry said this morning that trees at Senglea seafront have to be removed because of road alignment but they will be replanted a few metres away.
It said that in view of the concerns raised after the public consultation, it was decided to retain the existing trees along the Senglea waterfront, rather than repant them at Ta' Qali.
However, the necessary works will be done to avoid the lateral spread
of the tree roots to ensure that the embellishment works are safeguarded.
The waterfront's €1.6m embellishment project commenced this week and will continue, the ministry said.
The project involves new hard stone paving on the promenade and the pavements, re-alignment of roads from the Macina to Boiler wharf, scarifying of road surfaces and laying of new tarmac.
The project will also feature a new lighting system on the promenade, new street furniture, and the installation of cantilever walk way on the sea side area to ensure continues pedestrian accessibility right up to area next to Senglea Regatta Club.
The tender for these works was awarded in mid-August.
The existing trees will be moved because of the need for new road alignment.
The embelishment project forms part of ERDF funded projects for the Stronger Cottonera Communities – the citizen's right to accessibility and mobility (ERDF 104).
