The tactics the PN were in their claims about Labour’s position on the minimum wage were dirty and irresponsible and both politics and the people deserved better, Labour MP Justyne Caruana said this morning.

Addressing a news conference, she recalled ‘another lie’ by the PN about her vote on the power station. Nationalist MPs had claimed that Dr Caruana had voted with the government.

She said that while GonziPN tried to scare the people by looking towards the past, Labour looked towards the future.

Labour MP Chris Cardona said that in its claims on Labour’s position regarding the minimum wage, the Nationalist government was being a hypocrite.

The media were then shown a March 2010 video clip of Finance Minister Tonio Fenech, next to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, being interviewed and arguing that it would be irresponsible to raise the minimum wage because it would lead to employers not employing people if they could not afford it.

This was exactly the same position as Labour’s, Dr Cardona said, saying that an opportunity for both parties to have a common policy on an issue had been missed.

He said that the PL government would still give Cost of Living Adjustments and if the economic climate improved, the PL would also look to increase the minimum wage, something the PN government had not done in over 20 years.
