Footballer Kevin Sammut will on Tuesday file an appeal against a 10-year ban imposed by the European football federation last month.

Sources said the player received the reasons for his suspension from UEFA’s disciplinary body two weeks ago and his lawyers will be asking the appeals body to overturn the conviction.

When contacted Lucio Sciriha, who forms part of the legal team assisting Mr Sammut, said he had no comments to make, adding the appeal will be filed by next Tuesday.

However, sources said UEFA will also be appealing the decision, seeking a life-time ban for the player who was found guilty of match-fixing when still a national team footballer.

The case centres around the Malta vs Norway game played in Oslo five years ago as part of the Euro 2008 qualifications.

UEFA is also expected to appeal against the acquittal of two other national team players – Kenneth Scicluna and Stephen Wellman – who were also charged with fixing the game. The disciplinary body acquitted the two because of lack of proof.
