Vidic: Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic will miss the next eight weeks after undergoing surgery on a knee injury. Vidic was rested for the 2-1 weekend win at Liverpool after complaining of tightness in his right knee but further tests revealed the true extent of the problem, and the Serb has since had a meniscus operation.

Fined: Dinamo Zagreb said yesterday they have fined defender Domagoj Vida €100,000 for having a beer in the team bus on his way to a match. The amount represents a quarter of the 23-year old’s annual salary and could have bought him 50,000 bottles of local beer in any Croatia bar.

Poland: Poland will host Uruguay on November 14 in their latest friendly. While it will be a home game, the match location is yet to be fixed. Poland have met Uruguay on two previous occasions, both of them friendlies in Montevideo.

Hitzlsperger: Former Germany international Thomas Hitzlsperger is training with Everton with a view to getting a contract with the Premier League side. Hitzlsperger, 30, has been without a club since leaving Wolfsburg at the end of last season but has Premier League experience following spells with West Ham and Aston Villa.

QPR: Defender Anton Ferdinand will miss QPR’s League Cup clash against Reading today due to a hamstring injury. Jose Bosingwa suffered a hamstring injury against Spurs on Sunday and is unavailable, while Armand Traore (leg), Andy Johnson (knee) and Fabio (hamstring) are also unavailable.

Naismith: Scotland forward Steven Naismith is facing a FIFA charge after allegedly elbowing Serbia’s Srdan Mijailovic during a World Cup qualifier in Glasgow earlier this month. The incident occurred when Swedish referee Jonas Eriksson was looking the other way but TV footage appeared to show the Everton forward smashing his elbow into Mijailovic’s face close to the centre circle.

Gago: Struggling Valencia received a boost when midfielder Fernando Gago returned to full training yesterday after recovering from a neck injury picked up on international duty earlier this month. Gago was carried off on a stretcher during Argentina’s 1-1 draw in a World Cup qualifier in Peru and the player tipped to be a central figure in new coach Mauricio Pellegrino’s plans has missed Valencia’s last three games.
