Birżebbuġa local council has called on Transport Malta to finish roadworks and surface a road in the locality.

Works in Triq Dar Ta' Pultu were suspended seven months ago after a contractor, commissioned to surface the road was blacklisted by Transport Malta, Mayor Joe Farrugia said.

Speaking during a press conference on site, Mr Farrugia said the 10 families in the area were suffering and one particular resident, who used a wheelchair, had difficulty leaving his home.

During the press conference, a mechanical shovel was depositing fresh cement in front of a section of the road – exactly in front of the house of the disabled person.

"Why did it have to take seven months for Transport Malta to issue a direct order to replace the contractor?" he said.

Labour local council spokesperson Stefan Buontempo, also present at the press conference, said residents had the right to enjoy their property without any obstacles.

"These people can't go in their own road – it's a clear, blatant case of bureaucracy," he said.
