This was a record year for the number of Asian Tiger mosquitoes that have feasted on me. Am I the only one that cannot open the garden during the day or night as I end up bitten all over?

Friends of mine who live in Rabat and Swieqi have also complained about the same scary amount of these dangerous mosquitoes. Are there any national plans to control this alien species? They are breeding uncontrollably and, if left unchecked, the situation will be worse next year.

I was told that these insects came in with some plants but I am no expert. The same thing happened with the Red Palm weevil.

The ministry concerned should consider an incubation period on all plants entering the island.

If needs be, they should be sprayed and treated before the container is opened.

Australia has some of the tightest Customs controls in the world and they are very strict on alien insects. Shouldn’t we too exercise greater control, seeing that certain insects can affect our health and cause financial loss?
