Verdala Castle becomes a battleground
Video - Mark Zammit Cordina
Verdala Castle gardens were a battleground today - with re-enactors taking part in warfare from medieval times right through to Roman times, the Napoleonic wars and the Second World War.
Hundreds of people watched as the re-enactors in armour battled with swords, bows and arrows. Others in period uniform used ancient cannon and muskets and yet another section used WWII rifles.
The event also recreated living conditions in the encampments and included skill at arms displays and parades.
The event was organised by the Historic Re-enactment Group, which raised funds for L-Istrina.

The Maltese can be so critical. Look at the comment posted by Armelle Jallais, who I presume is a French tourist and who is paying you a compliment. The writer is also giving you a small piece of advice re using the common language, English, or using both the English and your native language, thereby making the event all inclusive, especially to the tourist.

You know a country has a special history when its Middle Ages precede Roman Antiquity

I really enjoyed the show! The actors were lovely and full of spirit. I loved the fact that each army was giving its commands in the original language, esp the French guys - If they want I will teach them the lyrics of the song they were playing: "aupres de ma blonde" :).
It's the second time I see the medieval knights in action and these guys are fantastic!!
I also greatly enjoyed a young lad who was talking about Roman measurement tools like an expert. I unfortunately don't speak a lot of Maltese but he was showing such a genuine pleasure in what he was doing, it was endearing.
Many thanks to all the troops for their great work and to the Maltese government to allow me to discover the lovely settings of Verdala Castle.

Was rather funny and needed better performance but at least the armies weren't mixed up. It would have been rather better if the original languages were used in certain cases .
