Updated: Woman injured in Birkirkara accident
A 27-year-old woman from Iklin was seriously injured in a traffic incident at the Birkirkara by-pass at around 9.30 p.m.
The woman was trapped in the wreckage of her Fiat Punto after it crashed into a barrier and became a tangled heap recognisable as a Fiat only from its badge.
Rescuers from the Civil Protection Department were called to help pull out the woman. She is receiving hospital treatment. Her injuries are not life-threatening.
The car was being driven towards Msida and crashed a few metres from the scene of another serious traffic accident on July 14. A set of traffic lights was destroyed in that crash - and has still not been repaired.

The road there is good enough. The drivers are careless and they are!!! At that time, no traffic, good weather conditions...why a decent driver should get involved into such an accident??? The drivers that are causing accidents should get only once a 300 euro fine for the services of the Police, ambulance or other services. I can bet for a 40% dropping amount of accidents.

That would be an excellent way to start educating drivers!

Our roads, regarding surface, are terrible, . Adding to this is bad design , improper super elevation, multi radial curves and so on. Driving over 60 km in this kind of roads is risky and an accident like this one is always due to over speeding relative to what the roads can handle as a safe speed. Driving at 60 instead of 90 or100 will only differ 5 minutes in our short distances. A good driver takes in consideration the quality of the roads and drives responsibly. I really hate seeing people ruin their health for 5 minutes! Speed kills! Please drive intelligently, life is to precious to waste it to government incompetency. Our roads are just asphalt covering and nothing more and some not even that. Pajjiz taz ZIBEL!

I simply cannot understand the manic way people drive in Malta. The distances are small- minute by European standards and yet people have to drive as if the devil was hot on their heels.

Speed is the problem here...you cannot have a car like that in an accident when you`re respecting the speed limit...

Don't wish to enter in any merits of how this accident happens, because accidents do happen.
But in this stretch of road we're seeing a lot of accidents....IT'S ABOUT TIME TRANSPORT MALTA WAKES UP!
PS...further down the same road just before the roundabout, a concrete giant is being built. I really wonder, where the rain water is going now, as it used to be absorbed by the fields....ah never mind...we flood the roads increasing the road's danger.

Mr Scerri, first you say that you don't want to enter in any merits of the accident and immediately after that's exactly what you do, and you blame Transport Malta. I pass this road at least twice a day and with all the traffic passing from there, it has a minimal amount of accidents. If everyone drives safely and within the road limits, i.e. 60km, then the accidents will surely decrease.

Hi James,
Please be more constructive, with your thinking, the whole industrial estate should have not been constructed and furthermore, the Birkirkara By Pass as well. Do you think that the concrete giant that is being built is going to be the culprit for the flooding situations in Birkirkara, and Msida, or the incompetence and bad planning accumulated throughout the years.

Mr murphy if you are not into first aid its better if you dont do anything cos it could be worse.what you should do is call 112 give them the exact locatio and keep talking to the persons involved until cpd comes...

That stretch of road is highly slippery in normal conditions imagine with some rain what will happen.
Probably double side barriers will protect both passers by and residents from cars ending up on the pavement.

Mr Borg, I don't think that stretch of road is highly slippery if you keep within the driving limit in that particular road, i.e. 60 kph. I pass from there at least twice daily and I never encountered any accident there at least for the last 12 months.
May the women involved recover in full

Imp to note re: traffic lights that after more than 2 months they still have not been repaired. Now that school /uni starts we are risking even more that someone gets run over. Wake up TM!! Speedy recovery to the injured.

Another accident a few metres away and the lights still not repaired after more than two months?
INCOMPETENT TM and an accident spot with nothing done about it.
Again INCOMPETENT TM.

Again ,why is it we never hear about the conclusions that caused this incident in order that we may learn from mistakes made however, or by whomsoever, these are committed .Whether its road problems or danger spots not remedied ,driver error ,driving too fast, mechanical problems ,DUI etc to inform the public of the root cause or major contributing factor.I would argue that such information would serve as a warning and possible deterrent.Wish the young lady a full and speedy recovery.

Wish this young Lady a speedy recovery. As regards the repair of the lights........it's never too late in Malta. At the end of the day these things only happen in Malta.

@Cuschieri, the point is the info so you don't try to pass with your car from there and get stuck in a traffic jam, get it?
Thanks Patrick
