It is heartening to see that the planning authority’s environment experts have slammed Transport Malta’s alternative plan to re-route part of Regional Road through Wied Għollieq valley at Kappara as it would have a major ecological impact, since “it would contribute to considerable land take-up at the expense of agricultural land, mature trees and habitats of ecological value”.

The Environment Protection Directorate said Transport Malta should opt for its earlier plan, referred to as Option A.

In reality, the architects should go back to the drawing board to come up with a solution which causes the least damage to the environment and to the residents, while minimising noise and pollution levels.

An Environmental Impact Assessment should be done to assess if, in the short term, the opening up of the corridors in the present roundabout would allow the Msida-Swieqi traffic and vice -versa to pass straight through and flow better.
