Mary Agius, the mother of murdered Malian Mamadou Kamara’s child, is planning to file a claim for compensation.

He treated me better than most Maltese did

The 32-year-old immigrant died after receiving multiple blows to the groin, shortly after he was captured by detention officers following an attempt to escape Safi detention centre.

Financial compensation will be sought from “the parties concerned”, including the Government as the entity responsible for the detention services, Ms Agius’s lawyers have told The Times.

Ms Agius is in the process of legally ascertaining that Mr Kamara is the father of her 10-month-old daughter Sata Mary, who was not registered under his name at birth because the couple were having trouble at the time.

“Afterwards, the plan is to ask the parties concerned, including the Government, to pay compensation,” lawyer Mark Vassallo said.

Three soldiers have been charged in connection with the case: Sgt Mark Anthony Dimech and Gunner Clive Cuschieri are accused of murder while Lance Bombardier Gordon Pickard faces a charge of tampering with evidence.

Ms Agius described Mr Kamara as “a doting father”, who gave her €150 a month to help raise Sata Mary.

“He loved his daughter dearly and treated me better than most Maltese did,” she said.
