A man who threatened to burn his former girlfriend alive was yesterday jailed for seven months and lost €3,000 in monetary guarantees.

Lydon Cutajar, 22, from Cospicua but who resides in Marsascala, was found guilty of breaching his bail conditions and of slightly injuring his former partner when he punched her in the face outside the Gianpula nightclub in Siggiewi early on August 27.

Mr Cutajar is the son of Giuseppe Cutajar, known as Il-Lion, who is facing criminal proceedings over the double murder of two men in a Marsascala garage last March.

Handing down judgment, Magistrate Francesco Depasquale gave more credibility to the version of events given by Graziella Grima, Mr Cutajar’s former lover, who testified that he had punched her after calling her a prostitute.

The magistrate said Mr Cutajar should be ashamed of himself for breaching bail conditions and for showing utter disrespect to the courts. He pointed out that the accused had had three previous convictions involving drugs and aggression.

Mr Cutajar was found guilty of breaching bail conditions, which stipulated that he should be at home between 10.30pm and 7.30am and that he would not approach Gianpula nightclub.

Mr Cutajar was jailed for three months for breaching bail conditions and a further four months for slightly injuring Ms Grima, breaching the peace and relapsing.

The magistrate also ordered the forfeiture of a €500 deposit and a €2,500 personal guarantee Mr Cutajar had made when he had been granted bail.

Mr Cutajar has filed an appeal.

Police Inspector Kevin Farrugia prosecuted. Arthur Azzopardi and Kathleen Grima appeared for Mr Cutajar.

Josè Herrera and Veronique Dalli appeared parte civile for Ms Grima.
