Have you seen this till thief?
Restaurant owner Mario Pisani yesterday decided to boost a police investigation into the theft of €2,700 from his unattended till by sharing on Facebook an image of a man caught taking the money on CCTV.
The theft took place at about 11am when the man walked into L’Aroma in Sliema and, speaking “in perfect Italian”, asked the only employee there whether the lift to the adjacent hotel was working.
The employee said yes but the man remained in the restaurant. He continued looking around then stopped in front of the cigarette machine, giving the impression he was going to purchase a packet.
When the employee went into the kitchen, the man went behind the bar, opened the register and took the cash.
The money was meant to have been used to pay the restaurant’s six employees.
Mr Pisani said the staff member had been busy preparing for Sunday lunch.
An image taken from the restaurant’s CCTV footage was given to the police. It was also posted on Facebook in the hope someone recognises the perpetrator.

I saw the footage, it looks a bit fake, like bad acting.

Why would you try rob a till before Sunday Lunch? You would rob it only after lunch when bills are paid? This guy knew something others did not know.

I cannot believe that today employees are still paid in cash. At least give them a cheque. Unbelievable.
And how do you keep all that cash in the till? On many occasions people ask for it. Now the money is gone.

It seems a bit strange to be paying employees cash from the till. Should they be paid via a bank account to make sure taxes and NI contributions are processed. Seems strange

Although it is a lot more secure to be paid via bank transfer into a bank account, as long as a payslip is generated and handed to an employee in order for them to verify their remuneration (and also for proper tracking and paying of Employee and Employer taxes/social security) there is nothing to stop an employer from choosing to pay their employees in cash.

"........there is nothing to stop an employer from choosing to pay their employees in cash."..........
And to, as in many cases, make it easy for the employers to hand out to their employees a miserly rate ( per hour ) of pay.

The timing and chance encounter by this thief at this time indeed seems mighty strange!

Colour me cynical if you will but unless this was a massively fortunate stroke of chance for the theif this smacks of an inside -job.As how would he know there would be so much money in the till at this unusual time fro such an amount to be in the restaurant otherwise?

He may have been just as happy with a e100 scoop, but as luck would have it, he landed on a e2500 bonanza? Let the police investigation take its course and then we can comment all we want.
