Digital games Maltese play
Researchers at the University of Malta are studying the impact that digital and video games are having on the Maltese community.
Academic members of staff from the faculties of education and ICT joined forces to evaluate the effects that digital and video games can have on learning that goes beyond classroom-based teaching, the University said.
They will seek to answer various questions including: what percentage of the Maltese population plays such games? What type of games are most popular? Is there a gap between generations when it comes to who plays games and how frequently?
“Results are expected to offer some insight into how Malta can maintain a competitive edge in the sector while exploring the educational implications of the digital and video game market vis-à-vis the national curriculum framework,” the University said.
Maltese citizens and those residing permanently here can take part in the national survey by visiting www.digitalgamesmalta.com.

Dear Mr Abela, thank you for your valuable comments. We are aware that there are people of all ages who play. However the 54 years ceiling was not chosen by us. This is a comparative study (the first of its kind) aimed at comparing our country with others. Foreign studies which we've seen all took the 54 years ceiling so in order to compare our results with their findings, we had to adopt the same methodology. Having said that, we find the elderly gamers very interesting and we'll definitely look into the possibility of including them in future studies. With regards to the parents issue, we need to gather some information about the children and that's why we chose the parents. Having said that, you are right in pointing out that many grandparents take care of their grandchildren, thus we decided to change that part to include all possible guardians of small children. Finally I would like to kindly ask you to distribute this survey since we need the help of everyone. Further still, this survey is not simply aimed at those who play games but also towards those who don't. So please distribute it to anyone you like. Finally, I would like to thank you for finding the time to participate.

Can there be an explanation why persons beyond 54 years of age are filtered out from this survey? When at it why do you have to be a father?

Making this survey, and then when you need to buy something regarding the game, it says you cannot purchase it cause you live in malta. Which is not fair, when i told them why i cannot buy i got a reply saying that it is the malta laws, dont know why. While italy, uk, ecc they all can buy items for their game. Look for example psvita store not eligibale in malta.

I tried to give my part in this survey, but quickly realized that I am discriminated against, because I am above 54 years of age and I am a grandfather and not a father, presumably still up caring for growing up children.
Though I will soon be 70, I assure the clever lads at the UoM that I am computer semi-professional and may have a contribution to give. I am sure that there is a good number of senior citizens like me.

Video games are an addiction,..I know somebody that will not answer the phone while playing a video game,.......it could be an important urgent call....

Mr.Mallia ,do you want to say that video games cannot be addictive? That was my only conclusion.

Of course they CAN be an addiction, just like food, drink and even work can be an addiction for some people. Just because some people get addicted to them it doesn't mean that all people who 'use' them are addicts, so I was just wondering on what basis you made such a generalised and bold claim!
