A huge fire destroyed 300 dwellings in a Sao Paulo slum, leaving more than 1,000 people homeless yesterday.

Residents used pails of water to try and douse the blaze and fought to rescue their personal possessions.

Six people were injured as the flames soared up to 10 metres high.

Firefighters said the fire may have started in a slum garbage dump.
