Work on the new bridge to Valletta will be completed on time and on budget in the first quarter of next year, minister Austin Gatt and officials handling the project said today.
The work is currently concentrated on the building of scaffolding which will be used while several metres on either side of the existing bridge are removed.
Workers are also repairing once more damage caused during the war to the first arch (the one closest to City Gate).
Project manager JeanMarc Smits explained that the width of the bridge will be reduced to seven metres from the current 20m.
New stone and steel decking will be laid on the central part of the bridge and then either side will be removed.
Pedestrians will continue to have access into the City throughout the operation.
