I have read last week’s article, Anger At Plan For Priests’ Complex (The Sunday Times, August 26) and agree wholeheartedly with the strong opposition expressed by the residents living in Zimmerman Barbaro Street.
I would like the authorities to answer some simple questions. Why was a permit ever considered for the construction of such a complex? Did the Mepa case officer present the case for approval? We are talking about a beautiful alley, not wider than 10 feet with only a one way entrance from St Anthony Street, ending up in a dead end to Bisazza Street. Why weren’t the residents consulted about such a huge project before it was approved? This is indeed shameful and I call on the government and the opposition to intervene.
How long do these poor residents have to put up with the construction of this monstrous project? Haven’t the residents paid good money for their properties? What about the pollution and the blocking out of sunlight? Not to mention the building of a 33 car space garage and delivery vans having to pass through the street every day. I do not believe the Mepa case officer ever approached anybody in Zimmerman Barbaro Street for their views on this matter.
What about pedestrians, the elderly and students who pass through the alley? Who is goingto be responsible for any accidents that might occur? Transport Malta? Mepa? The architects? The contractor? The Domnicans? Who will provide some answers? I hope the government and opposition will look into the matter and stop this monstrous project, thus helping the residents and saving the alley from destruction.
