Last month was the fourth warmest August since 1922, the Malta Airport MetOffice said.

In a statement this morning, it said that the averge air temperature was 28.6°C, 2.3°C over the climate norm. The warmest August in 1999 with a mean temperature of 29.3°C.

The highest temperature - 40.8°C - was registered on August 8. This was is the second highest temperature ever reached in August and is 10.1°C more than the 30-year climate norm. The highest temperature ever reached in August was 43.8°C on August 9, 1999.

The lowest temperature last month was 21.5°C yesterday.

This was the third highest minimum ever recorded since 1922. The highest minimum temperature was 22.2°C on August 5, 26 and 31, 1945.

The average sea surface temperature was 27.8°C, 2.3°C higher than the average value for the month.

The mean relative humidity was 70 per cent, which is lower than the 30-year mean climate average of 73 per cent.
