A man convicted of threatening to kill a lawyer who is now a judge was yesterday granted bail after spending nine days behind bars pending his appeal against a two-year jail term.

George Azzopardi, 48, from Birkirkara, was jailed after he admitted sending poison pen letters 10 years ago in which he threatened to kill Mr Justice Joseph Zammit Mckeon and harm his family.

He was caught after police recently matched finger prints lifted from the letters.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale jailed him for two years and remanded him in custody shortly after he signed an immediate appeal.

In proceedings yesterday, Mr Justice Michael Mallia granted him bail against a deposit of €1,000 and a personal guarantee of €3,000.

George Azzopardi, who had been found guilty of threatening Judge Joseph Zammit McKeon in anonymous letters 10 years ago, was jailed for two months last week.

Mr Azzopardi immediately appealed but was remanded in custody.

Mr Justice Michael Mallia this morning granted him bail against a deposit of €1,000 and a personal guarantee of €3,000.
