Former oncology head statement 'insult to Gozitan health professionals' - MUMN

The statement by the former head of Mater Dei’s Oncology Department that oncology services in Gozo meant a poorer quality service was an insult to Gozitan health professionals, the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses said.
In a statement, it said that it had waged a three-year campaign for such services to become available in Gozo in a bid to ease the suffering of Gozitan patients who had to travel back and forth for chemotherapy.
After three years and in spite of advice to the contrary by the Oncology Department, the government took the courageous decision to provide the chemotherapy services in Gozo, MUMN said.
It said Gozitan health professionals were capable of being trained and obtaining the same experience as their Maltese counterparts. Moreover, the Gozo General Hospital had better facilities than Boffa Hospital.

I know Stephen Brincat personally and I find it very difficult to believe that he would anything for his own ego or contrary to the good of the patient.

I completely agree with Government on this decision. We must do everything possible to make life a little bit easier to cancer patients. No matter how good & competent Mr Brincat might think he is, he must learn to put his ego aside! Such attitude does not help and the patient should always be first. No one should think he is God's gift to any profession!

dear Mr. mifsud, it seems that you have read the articles on the matter from the wrong side.. the matter here seems to be that a medical expert resigned because the implementation of a medical service to Gozo is not tenable due to the lack of specialized training given to the medical staff in Gozo.
this is like giving a jack hammer to a kid - he will learn but how much damage will he cause in the meantime??? wouldn't be better to train the person to handle the jack hammer before giving it to him??!! i used the metaphor of the jack hammer because i know through experiences shared with family and best friends that the illness of cancer has a jack hammer affect on the patient and theie relatives.

Coming to Malta for treatment is tiring for ill people who live in Gozo; it would be a boon for them not to have to cross the channel, twice, which adds to their discomfort. But you cannot just transfer nurses to Oncology before they are specialised. It's perhaps not even comparable to asking a trainee nurse to replace the anaesthetist during an operation.

Excellence in oncologic practice requires not only nurses with training and qualification in haemato-oncology. Excellent oncologic practice also demands medical doctors with appropriate qualifications.
If both parameters were to be fulfilled in Gozo, an oncologic "dependance" in Gozo would definitely be welcome for Gozitans suffering from malignant disease.
Nonetheless, one would also have to analyse the medico-economic aspect of such a venture. Excellence in the practice of medicine is without doubt a financially expensive experience.

I do not care what the MUMN says.
I hail from Gozo and if a member of my family were to require this type of treatment I would still insist that they cross over to Malta for their treatment. After all Boffa Hosp is the specialized unit and I would want only the best treatment for members of my family.

Dr Stephen Brincat huwa l-iktar persuna mill-iktar rispettata u li ghandha esperjenza twila f'dan il-qasam. Zgur li qed jitkellem fl-interess tal-pazjenti. Ninsab cert li l-opinjoni ta' Dr Brincat hija mill-aktar infurmata u ta' min joqghod fuqha. F'dan il-kaz l-importanti li noffru l-ahjar servizz mediku; jekk hemm it-tbatija fit-trasport, allura nirrangaw it-trasport. L-Ghawdxin ghandhom jisimghu sew x'qed jghid Dr Brincat ghax jaf x'qed jghid, u l-fatt li rrezenja ghandhom iktar jaghtu kaz u ma jahsbux sal-ponta ta' mnehirhom.

After 12 years visiting Boffa up to this very day and got used to the staff we have hardly heard about nurses being trained there that were sent to Gozo.
I am not questioning the abilities of the staff in Gozo but I am sure that simply having academic certificates in oncology does not make one an expert that can question Profs Brincat actions.
Thee MUMN has reacted as a union but unfortunately this time it has stepped into an area were the expertise of those heading the union is lacking in the field.
It is one thing talking about ambulances that are no better than scrap and about nurse' conditions at work , but it is another thing questioning an expert's in oncology opinions.

Kif sirna ma tista' tghid xejn ghax xi hadd jiehu ghalih....
Meta il familja tieghi gejna bzonn lill Profs Brincat, sibna persuna umlja u ta ghajnuna immensa.
Jiddispjacini ghal haddiehor, imma f'dan l-argument, jien ha nemmen lil Profs Brincat.

"It said Gozitan health professionals were capable of being trained and obtaining the same experience as their Maltese counterparts."
This confirms what Dr. Brincat stated. Currently there is a lack of trained personnel in Gozo. - "as it would have meant offering a poorer quality service in Gozo due to a lack of trained and experienced staff."
Dr. Brincat NEVER stated that they are not capable.
Or do they also lack basic knowledge of the English language as well?

Problema li hi ikbar hi li hafna tobba u nurses Ghawdxin imorru jahdmu barra minn Malta specjalment L-Amerika biex ikomplu jispecjalizzaw .
Infakrek ukoll li hafna Maltin qeghdin imorru l-isptar Generali ta Ghawdex biex jaghmlu operazjonijiet jew CT scan u dan ix xoghol ma nahsebx li isir minn haddiema li ghandom lack basic knowledge of the English language.

Dr. Stephen Brincat never shies out in stating the truth even though sometimes the truth is uncomfortable for some. His goal is, and remains the patient first.
Nobody should be insulted by his comments. He is one of the best oncologists in Malta. We have seen him standing up for irregularities in the past. We need more like him.
My solidarity goes for Dr. Brincat.

Dr.Stephen Brincat has done alot and he is still doing a lot to the health services in Malta and he among the few specialist that dedicates part of his regular work to Gozo, he has regular weekly clinic. The MUMN should understand what that mean before jumping and judging about this great doctor. Quasi every maltese knows Doctor Stephen Brincat as great helpful highly professional doctor and gentleman. It is just fair enough to appreciate what great nobel person like Dr.S.Brincat has done and still doing.definitely by all means he did not mean to insult any body in Gozo or in malta, he describes the level of the service now which could be improved and the improvement always comes through such critism which will create stimulus to that improvement. God bless you all.

And the PN unleashes its hounds against anyone who criticises the current administration.
I'm sorry but all those who know Stephen Brincat will be on his side, whatever dirty tricks you try to play.
