Stripes win the race for Herrera

Birkirkara’s pursuit of Edward Herrera came to a positive end yesterday after they reached an agreement with Hibernians to secure the services of the wing-back.

Herrera had become a major transfer target for the leading teams in the Premier League this summer after he handed in a transfer request earlier this month.

However, after days of negotiations it was Birkirkara who struck an agreement with the Paolites, paving the way for the former Melita player to put pen to paper on a five-year contract.

Another significant transfer that was concluded yesterday was that of Christian Caruana who joined Balzan FC from Floriana.

The acquisition of the 25-year-old striker is a major coup for Balzan coach Ivan Zammit who is looking to steer his team to Championship Pool football for a second successive season.

Caruana is now expected to make his first bow for Balzan against his former employers Floriana on Sunday.
