Air Malta to sell off Flyaway Tours
Air Malta said today that it will shortly launch an invitation for offers for the acquisition of its package holiday division, Flyaway Tours.
"The sale process will offer prospective bidders an excellent opportunity to
acquire an established, renowned package holiday brand which enjoys a solid customer base that has serviced the local community for over 35 years," the airline said.
"The process will be conducted in a seamless manner, both for customers who have already booked their holiday, and also for those who will be booking their Flyaway Tours during the sale process."
The sale transaction is expected to be concluded by the end of October.
Last year Flyaway Tours serviced more than 8,000 travel arrangements for individuals who booked over 23,000 bed nights. The division is geared to offer holiday packages for the individual traveller, not only to destinations on Air Malta's route network, but also beyond.

I cannot uderstand who will want to buy the flyaway section when you can get to the net and book tours at a fraction of the cost

You are right Paul... It is estimated that 38% of holidays are now being booked online, and this is expected to increase by as much as 15% next year.... The days of the good old Tour operators are numbered!

I totally agree with you.. today there are places on the net where you can book tours easily and at a low cost. around 40% of holidays are booked online as John said. like www.fly.com.mt in which you can compare hotels and flights in seconds and get amazing deals. Well good luck with the sale tough!

Simply absurd!
Our frail national airline which is not managed by a 'cuc Malti' is selling off one of its cash-cows.

...or rather cash eating cow. Had it been making money out of it - it wouldn't have put it up for sale!
Cash cow my foot! Flyaway has no value at all, especially now that's no longer a subsidiary of the same airline.

Can the chairman explain how this weeks Cardiff flight was overbooked by 37 people, so a second flight was arranged for the extra 37 of us !!! This clearly is not good business sense.

I fail to see any value in anyone wanting to acquire Flyaway Tours. Will AirMalta agree to offer highly discounted and exclusive flight fares to the prospective buyer.
If not what makes it different from any other elses?

Is this one of the conditions imposed by the EU for allowing the Maltese Government to help Air Malta?
Is this the same EU which has forced us to lend/guarantee €1.2 billion to irresponsible foreign EU governments and banks?

Flyawaytours is not worth anything as its success was always based on the simple equation that all tours were based from and to Malta with an Air Malta flight included. There was always an advantage of tweaking the KM prices to come out with very advantageous offers.
By splitting Air Malta from Flyawaytours, this just becomes another travel agency and there are far too many around. Flyawaytours does not have any customers that it can boast of. The customers belong mostly to AirMalta if anything!

Can the chairman of Air Malta tell us how much money the company is getting by selling its Flyaway Tours? Can the chairman tell us how much the company is going to lose by the contacts that are going to l be lost? What established, renowned package holiday brand which enjoys a solid customer base that has serviced the local community for over 35 years is going to replace the Flyaway Tours?, This is another leap in the dark taken by a management that do not know where to steer an airline that is still spinning around to nowhere.
