Notice to drivers
I strongly recommend that the following notice be placed on all street corners and junctions on the island:
Notice to drivers: Your vehicle is equipped with an indicator stalk at no extra cost, to indicate if you wish to turn right or left. Use it, dummy!

Mr. P. Camilleri, please note, Mr. A. Camilleri said nothing against using the hand to indicate which way one is turning. All he did was to comment on the way some drivers like to drive with one arm hanging from the window.

Mr Sammut Please note that that i understood correctly what Mr A Camilleri was refering too but was wondering if Mr A Camilleri and other motorists was/is/are aware that hand signals still applies besides relying on a cars electrical system?
also to the comment he made to Maltese male drivers!!

When I first visited Malta, over 25 years ago and at least once a year ever since, I thought that it would be possible that should I open a shop selling brake light bulbs and indicator lights, I could make a fortune. It's a good job I never did as it seems that both of these items are redundant in Malta.
I had always thought that Many Maltese drivers were telepathic and just KNEW when the vehicle in from was going to turn or stop. Judging from the amount of accidents on the island it seems clear that speedometers are an unused 'extra' on many vehicles too.

My conclusion after many frustrating years on this issue is that Maltese men feel it is not macho to use an indicator. On the other hand, its very macho to drive with your arm hanging out of the window - so why make an effort to pull it in and use the indicator?

@ Andrew Camilleri.
Sir while the highway code states for indicators to be used it does not exclude the use of the arm to signal a turn or to slow down or to allow someone to overtake or to stop. also i might add hand signals are there to be used while your driving ecause you do not know if your indicator or brake light might of burnt out.
also i must ask why you just mentioned Maltese men? i myself come across many Maltese correction females (because i cannot be sure if they are Maltese or not ) that do not put on their indicators ,some even just drive on coming in the opersit direction of a zebra crossing while i am stopped to allow people to cross and i might add i do have my arm out to show this person that i have stopped but she continued on her merry way with not a care in the world!!!

It is time the wardens start ticketing those who do not signal their intention to turn. Fine them and they will learn.

Thanks for" indicating" this info Mel-as i am sure that the majority of vehicle owners were not aware that their vehicles were equipped with indicators nor their purpose. But do you think you advice will be heeded?
