Mepa, save Dwejra chapel

I am sure most of you are familiar with the chapel dedicated to St Anne which is found in Dwejra, Gozo, overlooking the inland sea. My husband and I are especially fond of it since it is the place where we celebrated our wedding Mass a couple of years back.

Why is Mepa neglecting this lovely chapel?- Shirley Jobson, San Ġwann

A few weeks ago, however, we revisited Dwejra and to our dismay found the chapel to be in a somewhat dilapidated state, with repairs needed for the ceiling and the outside balustrades, to name but a few.

When we enquired as to whether there were any plans for it to be restored, we were told by the parish that a permit from the Malta Environment and Planning Authority was needed but they had been waiting for one-and-a-half years without any reply. I fail to see the reason for this delay in issuing a permit. After all, the building is there already; all it needs is to be restored to its former state.

Why is Mepa neglecting this lovely chapel, which holds a prominent place among the natural beauty of Dwejra?

I urge Mepa to grant the permit as soon as possible and allow the repairs to be done before it is too late! I also encourage the general public to make a contribution, however small, to the parish of San Lawrenz to help them cover the restoration expenses.

Please help to save this chapel so that it will continue to be enjoyed by generations to come.
