The Dutch police have confirmed that fears that a Vueling passenger jet had been hijacked were the result of 'mis-communication'.

The plane, carrying 180 passengers, landed at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam after a flight from Malaga.

The Dutch Defence Ministry had scrambled two F-16 fighters to intercept the plane over Dutch airspace.

The plane was surrounded by security forces as soon as it landed and it was later searched.

A spokesman for Vueling denied knowledge of any hijacking. He later said there could have been a mis-communication between the pilot and the control tower.

In the event of unlawful interference, flight crew dial in 7500 on their mode 3A transponders. Similarly, in the event of radio failure the code 7600 is used. For full flown emergencies like engine failure, the code 7700 is used. These codes communicate flight conditions discretely and clearly without having to resort to the common languages, which may as you suggest, sometimes be cumbersome.
