HAVE YOUR SAY - Should Malta's premier league start in August?
Malta's Premier League has kicked off, as it normally does, in the second half of August.
But does it make sense to have football matches at the height of Malta's summer when so few teams are involved?
On the other hand, can Malta afford to start later when international competitions and most major leagues overseas start at this time.

Of course not! It would be inhuman. It should start in late September with matches played also in mid week. Would anyone imagine Russian teams playing in the thick of winter with very many sub-zero temperatures. What's good for the goose should be good for the gander

the Maltese Premier league can start whenever the MFA and the clubs want it to start. As long as points won are still divided it won t matter at all if they start in June or November. This halved points ridiculous system we have is keeping spectators away from the stadium because everyone knows that the league only gets interesting after teams are divided in 2 groups - the championship pool and the relegation pool.Back in the old days every game was vital and i, for one, used to watch every game my team played.
Also many fans are of the opinion that this system opens the way to financially stricken clubs for abuse.
Fans will return to the stadium when this system is abolished, irrespective of the month the league starts.

Increase the number of teams (to 16?), play it on two rounds removing the nonesense of dividing points and start late September/beginning October.

Why not start with schools? Late September or early October...
It's not as if 'our boys' are setting any fields alight with their playing. I have yet to see such bad football....
bunch of petulant twits....

I bet you've never been to a match. Because in this country we have idiots like you who are Pele's and Maradona's who only watch millionaires playing. Barclays Premier League, Bundesliga, Spanish and Serie A are all dirty business. If you're opening your mouth to speak non sense you'd better keep it shut.

Before we moan about our level of football we'd better learn to watch football as spectators. Whenever a team wins, the players are great, when they lose the players are bribed. That's all we Maltese can say about football. We want to talk about top leagues around Europe and we can't even talk about our own football. Rubbish is the mentality of the Maltese people.

It's not like we have a choice ... we have European competition in July and national team games in August and September. One cannot expect to have teams stopping in May then restarting in July with the European Competions, then stop, and restart again in October. Nor can we expect our national team to have a further disadvantage added to our games in August and September by having players coming in without any match fitness.

No because the climate is still not that clear due to the last controversy, first its better to have calmer weather than an unsteady one internally in the administration of the MFA

When we develop the mentality of taking whatever seriously, then the professionals have to follow whatever it takes. Otherwise, no point to waste further space: in Malta we do not really have football, or do we ?

Does it make any difference when we start?........we could play all the year round and it still would not make an iota of difference to our prowess on the field. We are born losers as far as football is concerned and this is reflected in the supporters attendance numbers. Will we ever reach an acceptable level so we can keep our heads high?

No it does not make sense to me to start in mid-August, just because other countries do so. Here we are in the middle of the summer heat including humidity levels reaching 90 degrees. It's not as if thousands of spectators flock to see football matches ,anyway, let alone in this heat when everybody else is swimming.
