The hunting season will this autumn open on September 1 and carry on until the end of January.

The duration of this year’s autumn season, announced by the government yesterday, is identical to the one permitted in 2011.

The government said the hunting of birds on land shall be permitted between two hours before sunrise and two hours after sunset from Monday to Saturday.

On Sundays and public holidays, hunting has to stop by 1 p.m.

During the last two weeks of September, hunting will not be allowed between 3 p.m. and two hours before sunrise of the following day. The government said this was to protect raptors expected to migrate during that period.

Hunting of birds at sea will start later, on October 1, and go on until the end of January.

The Ornis Committee has proposed the application of a limited derogation from the EU ban on the trapping of golden plover and song thrush.

The government, however, requested additional information before making its assessment.
