The Maltese people know quite well how in the 1980s, Mr Mintoff was isolated and given the cold shoulder by the leaders of Western Europe, once referred to by him as the Europe of Cain and oppressive.

His friendship with Ceacescu, Gaddafi (arch democratic, said Dr Mifsud Bonnici) and Kim il Sung demonstrated his isolation from Western leaders.

It may also be recalled that in the early 1960s, our neighbours Italy, that always maintained that Malta was terra irredenta, rejected advances from Mr Mintoff to annex Malta with Italy.

No, Mr Mintoff never deserved a state funeral after having run this country with an iron fist and against the will of the majority.
