The national importance of the event was reflected in the unity shown during the funeral, Dr Muscat said in a statement.

In such moments, the people felt more proud of what they managed to achieve together, and what they could still achieve, he said.

Dr Muscat said he would particularly remember the spontaneous singing of the Nation Anthem by the crowd yesterday.

The Labour Party also announced that it had appointed a committee headed by deputy leader Toni Abela to work with the Mintoff family on the building of a monument for the former prime minister. The committee will also be responsible for activities, publications and other events in honour of Mr Mintoff.
