André Xuereb, a 2011 PhD graduate from the University of Southampton, UK, has recently had his doctoral thesis published.

Entitled ‘Optical cooling using the Dipole force’, the book is part of the Springer Theses series, which aims to highlight exceptional Ph.D work, and is available through online book retailers.

Dr Xuereb’s work focuses on the quantum mechanical nature of light and on the interaction of light with moving objects.

After completing his Ph.D in the UK he spent some months working as a post-doctoral researcher in the German city of Hanover. He now divides his time between the University of Malta and Queen’s University in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he is a research fellow of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851.

He recently represented Malta at the 62nd meeting of nobel laureates in Lindau, Germany.
