A 28-year-old driver drove off after running over a man in Victoria, Gozo, early this morning , but later she turned herself in at the police station.
The police said the incident happened at about 6 a.m. The 64-year-old man, resident of Victoria, was hit by a car in Capuchins Street and was seriously injured.
The driver, a 28-year-old woman also resident in Victoria, later turned up and told the police that she was the driver involved.

does it not occur to you that the poor woman as you put it could be covering up for someone else who does not posses a licence or insured?
what proof is there that this woman was actually driving none because she fled the scene
SO STOP MAKING UP ESCUSES LIKE PANICKED OR ANY OTHER UNFORGIVING REASON LEAST OF ALL CONGRATULATE HER FOR RETURNNING HERSLF IN!!!!

while it is very positive that she turned herself up at the police station......one should prepare himself for such events...in case of accident always stop....and for 3 reasons 1 the law says that 2 call for help if any injured 3 it may not be your fault!!!!!

95% of the cases according to our courts it is always the driver's fault even though the accident is initially caused by the pedestrian...

A minimum prison term for running from an accident scene, should settle things, imagine being left injured on a road somewhere, maybe at night time.

Well at least this driver knows that two wrongs don't make a right. Hopefully the injured man will be alright.

while it is comendable for the driver to return later to the police, i dont see any reason to praise the driver.
the law requires anyperson involved in an accident to remain at the scene, if this driver for some reason paniced and fled the scene it should still be treated as a hit and run, after all no one can prove she was the actual driver which caused the incident.

I guess you suffer from the 'generalization syndrome'. Your stupid comment does not make justice to the overwhelming majority of law abiding Maltese!

while it is comendable that the driver went turned over herself to the police. it is not an object to be praised about after all she was involved in an accident and fled from the scene. there is no escuse to be said about the driver fled. she should of remained with the injured person. one cannot just say oh i panicked and did not know what i was doing!!!! you were driving you felt fit to drive then when you had the accident you are aware that one must remain at the scene, so the authourities can decide accuratly who is at fault and the cause the accident.

Well done to the driver, for after the shock she went to the policestation.

@ Rita Mangani: It would have been well done if she did not cause the injuries, just to put things in perspective...

I just cannot understand why some Gozitans and also Maltese do not have the decency to stop or even report an accident, what are they afraid of, maybe no insurance or road tax or even carrying something illegal or even perhaps a stolen vehicle, this is very typical over here. We've been here nearly 5 months and during this time my car was hit, damaged and dented 4 times, helas no one in sight as nobody has the guts to speak out and report such accidents, so needless to say my insurance is now living in Gozo is sky high. Sorry but its a fact. Good luck to the injured person

unfortunatley these things happen, but not just in malta and gozo, only the week before there was an incident in leeds ( yorkshire ) where a driver knocked 2 kids and drove off.

Kindly note that there are quite a lot of ex-pats and tourists living and visiting Gozo. Please bear in mind that most visiting tourists come from countries that drive on the right hand side of the road and many an instance they do not "calculate" when driving or parking. My parents live in Qawra during the summer months and on several occasions it had to be a Maltese to report the accident in question. Yes there are some people who are irresponsible, but I hate it when people point fingers at Maltese and Gozitans when a negativity occurs. A point in case is that you never mentioned the positive side of it, that the driver in question, BEING A GOZITAN, did go on her own steam to report the incident. It could have been anyone damaging another person's vehicle and driving off and not just the "some Gozitans and also Maltese who do not have the decency to stop or even report an accident" !!! I've seen Maltese, English, Italians, Swedes, Germans, Spanish, French and other people causing damage to other cars and driving off. And when possible I did my utmost to report what i saw at the nearest Police station. So please bear in mind that it could also have been some English or other national who do not have the decency to stop or even report an accident.

The explanation is simple and universal; it is momentary confusion and the driver be praised to have acted correctly as soon as she recovered.

Christopher Galea it seems that you have a lot of anger towards non residents. Your comment clearly shows that. Let me inform you on a fact....the maltese and gozitans are notoriously bad drivers who just do not care.
I quote ''Yes there are some people who are irresponsible, but I hate it when people point fingers at Maltese and Gozitans when a negativity occurs.'' Perhaps some anger management classes and anti ignorance would do a world of good...

I understand Mr Longhurst's frustration, but I wonder what makes him seem to believe that only some Gozitans and Maltese persons do these things!
Although such acts are not to be commended, there can be several reasons for doing so. Panic and fear can be some of the reasons. The woman involved in this case in Gozo gathered her strength and reported herself to the police.
Hit and run cases are sadly very common all over the world and not restricted to our islands. Stopping, giving first aid to the victim and calling an ambulance is the only sensible thing to do so as to mitigate the consequences both to the victim and to the driver him/herself.
I invite readers to see a case of hit and run by another woman but this time in the UK. However, the woman in the video kept on driving and was followed by a citizen who (surprisingly!) witnessed and video-taped everything. This woman even tried to deny running over a 75 year old man, when confronted by this citizen who knew exactly what he was doing and how to do it. It is my belief that he is an off duty serviceman or ex-serviceman of some type. Admirably, this citizen, felt the duty not to let her get away and made a ‘citizen arrest’. The woman who ran over the old man, even had the nerve to say that she is late for work and insisted to keep on going!

@A Camilleri. The driver of the incident in Leeds has been arrested and no doublt will be charged and receive a prison sentence, that will not be a suspended one, for reckless and dangerous driving and leaving the seen of an accident. He will also be banned. I just wish that the judiciary in Malta would take a tougher stance. I hope the gentleman recovers.

First I pray for the injured man to have an early recovery. Please take note that unfortunately these things happen everywhere, as we all know. Only last Saturday, as Mr. A. Camilleri already mentioned, two kids were run over in Leeds, UK. The driver also didn't stop. Well he did, only for a moment and then kept going!

It usually doesn't take the British police long to trace the driver in such cases. That one was caught a couple of days later.

Mr Scicluna, I take it you too are Maltese so I guess that makes you one of the drivers you mentioned in your comment. Re the anger bit, yes it angers me when someone mentions only our wrong doings when a lot worse doings are happening in one's back yard! And please do not generalize since I too have family who are non Maltese.

First, let us hope that the injured man recovers quickly.
Well done to the driver for reporting to the Police and thus saving a lot of Police time and money in searching for her. The "fight of flee" instinct does not always make the right decision and it is unfortunate that the driver chose to flee rather than help or call for help and remain to give assistance.
