Mellieħa residents have been forced to cope without power twice since Thursday afternoon after a road contractor accidentally struck electricity cables, Enemalta said yesterday.

The first outage happened on Thursday at about 3.40 p.m. when the contractor struck an underground cable during work, leaving many locals without electricity.

Enemalta employees restored power to most areas by 5.30 p.m., with the last substation re-energised at 2 a.m. yesterday, the corporation said.

The second incident took place yesterday at 8.30 a.m. when the same contractor hit a second cable.

This caused another suspension of supply to other parts of Mellieħa and power was restored shortly after 9 a.m.
