All hell broke loose in Paceville early on Wednesday morning when four Libyan men set upon two Bulgarian brothers after being told to pipe down.
The four Libyans, described by their lawyer as upstanding individuals, living in Portomaso, admitted in court to beating up the brothers and were given suspended jail terms.
Magistrate Francesco Depasquale heard that the Libyan men – Rami Almehsey, 25, Ziad Elallaghi, 25, Hosameden Hamal, 26 and Rakan Halwaji, 33 – were making a lot of noise at about 6 a.m.
The Bulgarians, Aleksander and Georgi Antansov, who live in Ġzira, told them to keep quiet and a fight started.
Lawyers José Herrera and Veronique Dalli told the court they were upstanding individuals, one of them working for the Libyan Investment Authority back home.
The four admitted to seriously injuring the Bulgarian men and breaching the peace while the Bulgarian men were charged with causing them slight injury.
Magistrate Depasquale gave the Libyans a two-year jail term suspended for four years and ordered them to pay any medical bills that the Bulgarian men have incurred.
Dr Herrera said his clients were renouncing any action against the Bulgarians which led the magistrate to acquit them.
