Mintoff was 'father of the nation' - GWU
The GWU this morning said Dom Mintoff deserved to be called Father of the Nation because he was the one who put Malta on the world map and pulled the workers out of misery.
In a statement, the union saluted the former prime minister, saying he had been the one who taught the workers how to fight for their rights. He had also brought about reforms which the people were enjoying to this day, including social benefits and free education and health services.
Under Mr Mintoff, Malta also freed itself from the chains of colonialism.
The GWU was statutorily linked to the Labour Party while Dom Mintoff was prime minister.

I would not call Mr. Mintoff Father of the nation. That is exaggeration and pure idolation typical of the Labour Party.

@ Aaron de Giorgio
"But to call Mr Mintoff "Father of the Nation" is absolutely hogwash. Mr Mintoff was a father figure, a saviour to 50% of Malta"
Agreed, but he was also the TRAITOR of 90% of those 50% who used to consider him a father and a saviour.
@ gwu
No mr gwu, the ONLY father that I can adopt instead of my biologcal father, is only DOTTOR GIORGIO BORG OLIVIER, the person that gave birth to Malta on the 21 st. SEPTEMBER 1964, INDEPENDENCE DAY.

Outright ridiculous.
But then again, well deserving to a country whose citizens are not fit in a million years to govern such a country.
I'd like to add my voice to the people below, the General Slackers Union should sht the f up lest it tarnishes their reputation any further (assuming they do have any left).

Will you lot please STOP refering to Mintoff "father of the Nation"? I do NOT consider any Prime Minister, my father - this country is called MALTA and we are in the year 2012. If you insist that you want to refer to Dom Mintoff as "father" at least speak for yourselves and do not include me in.
Us, the common citizens made Malta what it is today, not the politicians. The politicians run the country because WE give them the mandate to do it - decisions are taken by them but at the end of the day we end up paying most of the price for any bad decisions and mistakes, not vice versa.

Dear GWU,
Where was my father (Mintoff), when Lorry Sant closed my dad's shop for 6 whole months just because my family was not Labour?!
RIP Mr Mintoff

Lorry Sant was the enforcer for the MLP and I wouldn't be too surprised if Dom Mintoff himself was not fully aware of what Lorry Sant was capable of doing. Ask some of his victims.

If Mintoff was 'Father of a nation' not the same can be said about GWU for various reasons espcially that when it was married to the MLP government .
How can a union ever protect it's members when it is married to the employer ?

yes how right you are
it was the joke of the century
il GWU was the puppy dog who followed mintoff with a muzzle on its mouth
those were the workers rights of those days
shamefull days long gone for good.

Respecting Dom is up to the individual's perception but no one can deny that it was Dom Mintoff who laid the foundations of this nation which rid itself of foreign dominance and established a social fabric for all Maltese and Gozitans. He made mistakes, of-course, but always put the Maltese islands first and foremost.

Yes sure . . . by reaching an accord with practically every single tin-pot dictator and banana republic of the age . . . . as for ridding Malta of foreign dominance and laying the foundations of the nation . . . . . try telling that to the 3000+ workers who found themselves redundant when the contract with the British military was terminated because they refused to accept his terms . . . Out of respest for a deceased person, I will not comment on Mr Mintoff, except to say may he rest in peace.
But the statement by the GWU is rich indeed. During Mintoff's time, they trampled on the interests of the workers right left and centre. Their only aim was to back whatever the MLP did to the hilt, and to hell with the workers and their families.

The GWU was owned and run by the Labour Party when Mintoff was in power. As a matter of fact the GWU was very accommodating to serve the MLP. He often used the GWU as his right arm and the rest is history. The GWU would not be here today if it wasn't for Dom Mintoff and his left hand Lorry Sant. Remember him? He is the one that did all the dirty work for Dom Mintoff and controlled the dock workers etc.

A father of the nation is someone who's respected by all the nation. In the USA, for example, George Washington is considered as such and everyone respects him. I don't think everyone respects Mintoff in Malta.

May he rest in peace. Let us not get too carried away with SLogans. MIntoff was the leader of a party and the Prime Minister of Malta. Malta never had a father not a mother. It is island nation that withstood time. IT's up to us Maltese and Gozitans collectively to protect it and cherish it.

Mr Mintoff was a legend to his supporters and anathema to his opponents. There is no doubt that he should be called the father of Malta's welfare state.
But to call Mr Mintoff "Father of the Nation" is absolutely hogwash. Mr Mintoff was a father figure, a saviour to 50% of Malta, and reviled by the other half. It is only communist and dictatorial regimes that bestow such titles!
Malta was on the world map long before Mr Mintoff came along, but it is his undoubted efforts that provided education, social services, healthcare and support to tens of thousands who would have otherwise languished until the modern state brought them into the fold.
As usual, the GWU fails to realise that unions are past their sell-by date.
Unions were formed to protect workers from exploitation. They then became political movements globally, which simply hinder the workers from working. Mr Mintoff was a legend in the political nationhood struggles of the sixties, across many former colonies, along with Archbishop Makarios III (Cyprus), General Nasser, Colonel Gaddafi, Fidel Castro and so on.
But that time is up and we simply need to move on, with a nod to a significant local political giant.
