49 dogs rescued
A total of 49 small breed dogs were rescued from a residence in Balzan this afternoon in an operation carried out by the Animal Welfare Department with the help of the police.
The dogs, which included chihuahuas, pugs and poodles, were being kept in restricted spaces and unhygienic conditions. They were ungroomed, many had skin conditions, two had eye problems and one was wounded.
They were taken away in department pens and are currently being held at pens in Ghammieri.
The department intervened after receiving several reports that a large number of animals were being kept at the residence in unsuitable conditions.
At the residence they also found an eagle and a hawk and hundreds of domestic birds. These were, however, kept in adequate cages.
The Malta Environment and Planning Authority is checking to see if the eagle and hawk are registered and chipped.

Were the dogs microchipped and neutered? or was this one of the puppy farms we hear about from people who only turn up puppies to sell in the monti and in Pet shops? The sales of puppies and kittens from pet shops should be banned. As supply and demand rules mean that these farms only produce more and more puppies for sale in pet shops which then get dumped. Also all animals sold or given away as pets should be neutered.

some people are not fit to have animals if thats the way they are treating them, should be punished serverley but probably just get a slap on the wrist! absolutely terrible.

Well done for the AWC for tackling this, these are the kind of people who should be targeted as they are causing unnecessary sufferings to these poor animals, all in the sake of money. Pity that because of such people, many decent and responsible breeders are being put in the same measure. Hope the Court will not reduce the AWC's work into ashes by giving a stupid sentence.

How ironic. Neighbours to this house have been complaining to the sanitary authorities for years and years about the proliferation of rats and cockroaches which come out of this house and its garden, where many other birds are kept. Yet no action was ever taken. Finally action has been taken to stop cruelty to animals. Hats off to the animal welfare department. Thumbs down to the sanitary authorities.

And while you are at it, Animal Welfare, go check on the dogs (kept in a flat) near the old Church, Birkirkara.
Neighours have reported the animals who bark all day, but the Council does not seem to want to do anything about it. I feel sorry for the animals, they are probably lonely and not much space.
The barking has been going on for years. Doesn't anyone care?

I share your thoughts. It's time for the police to take this matter seriously. Its unhealthy for both dog and neighbours.

this whole story goes back to 1st april . our lovley cihuahua dog was missing from our house in our backyard . our neighbours told us that they saw a men running after our dog in our back yard . the search for our missing dog got started by posting hundreds of posters and large reward . we reported to the police station , we checked all the animal welfare and hospitals . since now from time to time we still ring the spca and those who find dogs out in the street. but last Sunday morning our neighbours told us that they saw the same men who had stolen our dog passing from our house , we followed him 3 blocks down and entered a house , from outside it was ruined and full of garbage we bring the police immediately but not much help because he left a two large pit bulls running around the police legs and trying to bite . but i noticed there was a mess in this house ,like a small rabbit cage and in these rabbit cages there were four dogs in each cage . i noticed too all the windows were covered with cardboard boxes so all the house was in darkness , and lots of rubbish all around the house , with that mess hardly i could see my dog , the police told us that there was nothing we can do and we left home disappointed knowing that our dog was in there somewhere . by monday morning we rang the animal welfare . the man had told us that he was going to take action immediately and surprise how the police had done much . and tuesday morning he went to take an action and found the 49 dogs plus hundreds of birds .but we have to wait till the next day , to see if our dog is there.

"These were, however, kept in adequate cages"... Are you serious? Since when do we keep eagles and hawks in the midst of a villa area! Not even on a farm in the midst of nowhere! And what about the mice and rats he breeds to feed his so-called "pets"? Have they been taken away as well or at least poisoned?

If this is the residence one imagines it is . . . why haven't the sanitary authorities taken action too . . . the stench of animal droppings and stale feed is a nuisance and a health hazard to people even a block away!!
