Heat takes its toll on horse

Video: Mark Zammit Cordina

The heat proved to be too much for this poor horse this afternoon which had to be stopped by his owner who realised that something was wrong as he was taking tourists on a trip round Valletta.

The owner stopped the ride, untied the horse from the carriage and gave the animal water as he waited for the animal to regain his energy.

I am writing on behalf of Animal Rights Group.. We would like to inform all concerned that we have been working on this issue for years. We have been to all meetings regarding the well being of these animals with various Government entities. As we have been informed by TM that banning Karozzin horses on our roads goes against Human Rights we have opted to work to get the most comfortable conditions for these animals. We insisted on water availability, shelters etc. So far through working with MRRA one shelter with water points at Valletta Waterfront for 11 horses and another in Marsamxett which we consider can only shelter one horse comfortably have been erected. We have been awaiting a reply from the Ministry regarding the URGENT need for temporary Shelters. The only reply we got so far has proved unsatisfactory,as we were informed that this is being "considered". As I have now been elected by NGOs to represent them on the Animal Welfare Council,I have been insisting that the carrying of comfortably sized buckets for horses to drink from before each trip and the carrying of a sponge to wipe and sooth the horses, should be made law as well as other necessities which would take too long to list here. These Noble animals need all the help they can get...

Mr V Cassar yes before horses were used to carry things people couldn't and to "work" for people but we created cars... so why don't we give these horses a break?

Because first we have to focus on those horse-breeders racing these horses up to exhaustion after drenching them in illegal drugs and steroids, not a simple man trying to make a living out of means which have been in our culture for ages... But since this article is about karozzini, people only think about what is presented to them, unfortunately.

Well done Mr Zahra, your policy in this reagrds sets an example to other 'tourist operators', it only reflects serious management, in my opinion.

I am sure that if tourists are aware of such policies they hold your organisation in high esteem.

Because in Malta, animals are animals and although some of us try to be their voice, our voice falls in deaf ears! So much so, that it goes to prove that no matter how educated or not people are, we are the beasts and not them as we have very little heart unlike them!

Many tourists already do. I have heard several refusing offering of rides, saying "poor beast" or "pauvre bete".

I fully agre with you. I come home once a year and it makes me angry and sick to see these horses in the heat pulling karozzini. Please, please, put a stop to this once and for all. No more karozzini in Malta. Tourists can walk or catch a bus if they want to see the sights.I was so happy last month when I did not see any in St.Julian's over a period of twelve days.Time up, put a stop to it, FULL STOP.

I think your suggestion makes a lot of sense Francesca. It is not a compromise but a good idea for the welfare of both the horses and the cab owners.

Franco, how about starting a petition to be sent to the EU? Let us do it. These animals suffering in silence is just too horrific to contemplate.

Ruby Jenner

Agree. What sort of tourist wants to take a trip on a horse pulled vehicle in this heat. Tourist's please take your trip in the evening don't let the poor horses suffer in the heat.

Franco..I agree..The government here seems so inadequate...It,s pure wilfull blindness...All so frightened of the votes and intimidation..only perhaps react when the Media, thankfully, highlights abuse...dog cruelty..illegal campsites, etc.

They must pass these poor horses,in their air conditioned government cars daily and probably never bat an eyelid. This sort of activity should be banned for the whole summer..actually ban it completely in places likel valletta with all it,s hills....These people should go and get a proper job..

The Minister responsible is blind to the plight of non-human animals. The Ministry involved only looks on animals to serve as play-things, as means of entertainment, to human beings.
Proof of this?
The yearly arrival in Malta of the animal circus: how many times have we condemned it? And the people at the top of Dar Centrali simply wash their hands off the whole issue just because there's one of their Sliema darlings who brings it to Malta, every year, that's why!
The Petting-Farm, or whatever they're going to call it - not a bad idea but it is far from animal-centred.

But this whol issue of horses on our streets is the pits! It is truly disgusting. The Government does not have in place people who truly love animals in charge of the tiny animal-welfare activity going on. How can this make sense? You need animal-lovers in charge! U mela nies li qas biss taf fejn se tibghathom jahdmu?!

@ Charles Grixti

I agree 100%! A petition should be carried out and the Maltese should stop whining and start taking some action as this country is being shredded to bits.

Are you serious - compliments !!!!

He was looking-out for himself NOT the horse.

Tonio Bone

Aug 19th 2012, 19:53

Okay, okay!
@ Paul - agreed, but he could had gone on until the horse fell to the ground lifeless. Just tried to give the lad the benefit of the doubt!
@ Stephen - agreed, must be much more in direct sunlight.
@ JC - again, I opted to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, but as you say, he might have been looking more after his asset than the animal itself!

There is only one way to save these animals lives, STOP. Yes, ban them altogether. Not part of the day but stop this cruelty for ever.

Mr Bone,

It is not just Valletta, even the ones in cities such as Rome and NYC are terribly abused. The horse-drawn carriages should be a thing of the past.
