Frank Attard, writing from Toronto (August 14) is wrong when he states: “I am sure that one of his bigger accomplishments was when he made Malta a republic whereby foreigners would no longer tell the Maltese government what to do. Malta for the Maltese.”

I thought we had long passed this “Malta for the Maltese” (and “Malta first and foremost”) nonsense. The words between brackets are mine.

When Dom Mintoff made Malta a republic, all he did was to abolish the monarchy. Malta became an independent nation in 1964 under George Borg Olivier, so much so it was then that Malta took its place at the United Nations. And Mr Mintoff is 96 years young, not 98.
