The Cana Movement owes it to the country and to the Church to demonstrate how and why IVF opens the way to abortion, Fr Rene Camilleri says in a letter published in The Times today.

Last week, the Cana Movement warned that the bill to regulate IVF had opened the way for abortion.

The Cana statement has since been criticised by several people including priests, among them resident blogger Fr Joe Borg, who described it as “extremely disappointing”.

Fr Rene wrote in his letter that it was unfortunate that Cana opted for fear tactics rather than a sound and reasonable contribution to enlighten the debate.

The movement should have availed itself of its experience to help ensure the best law possible for the country, he said.

“I think the Cana Movement people now owes it to the country and to the Church to demonstrate how and why IVF opens the way to abortion.

“Otherwise, we have all reasons to consider their statement as a mere repetition of clichés, among them that children are a ‘gift’, implying that some deserve it while others do not,” Fr Rene wrote.
