People who have taken over public land at Armier Bay should not be allowed to “enjoy the fruits of their crime”, Carmel Cacopardo, deputy chairman of Alternattiva Demokratika, the green party, said yesterday.
He referred to a news conference given earlier this month in which an official of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority said the problem at Armier was “bigger than Mepa”. Mr Cacopardo has said he agrees.
“The problem is the result of the direct involvement of those politicians who have been in power for the past 40 years, who ignored the continuous abuse of taking over public land and its development,” he said.
“Secret meetings were organised on the eve of general elections in order to find a formula so that those who took over public land could be allowed to retain its possession.”
AD said it does not agree that the squatters should be given preferential treatment.
It maintains that the existing boat houses should be demolished and the squatters evicted.
The draft Marfa Action Plan should be amended in such a way that no beach rooms or boat houses are constructed.
“The coast should be available to all,” Mr Cacopardo said.
