Ecuador grants asylum to Assange
The Ecuadorian foreign minister announcing his government's decision.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been granted political asylum by Ecuador after taking refuge in the country's embassy in London.
The announcement will increase tensions between the UK and the South American country, which has been warned that the situation could have "serious implications" for diplomatic relations.
Mr Assange sought sanctuary in the embassy in Knightsbridge in an effort to avoid deportation to Sweden, where he faces sexual assault charges.
Ecuadorian ministers have accused the UK of threatening to "attack" the embassy to seize Mr Assange after it emerged that a 1987 law could allow the revocation of a building's diplomatic status if the foreign power occupying it "ceases to use land for the purposes of its mission or exclusively for the purposes of a consular post".
Under international law, diplomatic posts are considered the territory of the foreign nation.
The British Foreign Office has said the decision on Mr Assange's application for political asylum would not affect the UK's legal obligation to extradite him to Sweden.

Seems to me Mr. Assange that you are destined to have that smirk wiped off your face. How dare the Swedes for not doing as the Ecuadorians have requested, as if they have any say on human rights policies????? I applaud our government, the Australian government, for not sticking its unwanted nose into this business (for a change), DEFAT is not there to protect criminals.
Beware of the SAS Mr. Assange, their role in 'resolving' embassy issues has been recorded into history. More than what that you deserve I reckon

How sickening and ironic, that Sweden that prides itself as a champion of human rights, can come up with such trumped up charges. One of which is of a rape after a consensual sexual act, and the other of a simple molestation.
It is unbelievable, that they also refuse to guarantee that Assange would not be eventually be extradited to the USA where he could very possibly face the death sentence.

When it comes to serving the one master Sweden or any other country lie down and plays the poodle.
Interesting thing is Assange has not even been charged by the Swedes on the alleged rapes. Ecuador government rquested Sweden to question Assange over the rape matter. Sweden refused to do so. Although previously Sweden Sweden sent an investiing team to Serbia concerning a murder in sweden.
It is but certain the whole game of the US/UK/Sweden is to get Assange to Sweden for the purpose of one single objective to have him extradited to teh USA. Meanwhile it is better for Assange to be literally imprisoned inside the Eduadorian embassy than be undergoing the water boarding in America.

Mr Assange has committed no crime except told the world the truth about the countries that preaches to everyone about Human Rights and Crimes against Humanity. America has the most innocent blood on their hands since WWII. Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos to Iraq and now in Afghanistan and many in between. The UK with its long colonial history and of late in partnership with America.
Mr Assange is an honest man exposing the wolves dressed in sheep clothing’s. LONG LIVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH. SHAME TO OUR AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT FOR ABONDONING A GOOD CITEZEN.

Asange is no innocent bystander, by any means. He did everything in his power to publish secrets given to him by others. The secrets happen to be about some of the most powerful and rich on the face of this corrupt planet.
Asange had free sex with females in a country that has free sex laws between any sex partners. A country known for blue movies and porn. These partners in sex took some time to report the violation of their bodies. One of the women is alleged to be an undercover CIA agent, or at least in their pay. They only did this after the 2 females found out that Asange had sex with the other. If this is not the most deviat plot of female jealosy, then I do not know what is.
I am ashamed that the Australian foriegn minister has decided to keep mum on this matter, considering that Bob Carr has the biggest sticky beak in Australia. Ahhhh... he likes to be likened to President Lincoln.
What a gaf.

The man has not been charged with any crime. He is wanted for questioning. Ecuador sought Swedens agreement for Assange to be questioned at the embassy in London. They refused. Ecuador sought a guarantee that Assange not be extradited to the United States - where thay have the death penalty and will surley kill him. Sewden again refused. For all the democrtaic principles and supposed credentials that the Western "democracies" keep pushing down everyone's throats I think this reaction from the UK , Sweden and also the US puts them in the same box as North Korea and Iran. The whole reason behind this is that getting rid of Assange will destroy Wikileaks and protect the Western democracies' hypocracy from being further exposed - the truth is not what it seems.

The man who leaked this (no, not the murderers but Brad Manningthe whistleblower) is facing life in prison or even death.

I don't believe there was ANY sexual assault. Come on, this person's enemies are the most powerful and corrupt people on earth. It's too convenient for them that he assaulted someone for the general public to believe it.
This man is exposing the worst scandals of our times. And by scandals I don't mean the president cheating on his wife but the theft of billions of dollars that should have been spend on combating malaria, killing of innocent civilians and wars based on fabricated premises.

What you believe is irrelevant. Assange is in breach of his bail conditions...he should surrender period.

When you know you are going to suffer the Water boarding in America, then perhaps jumping the bail is merely a simple enduarnce.

@Kenneth Baldacchino.
All countries, even those the most free have dirty laundry that they don't want exposed. Even the the most free countries have some skeletons in their cupboards. Remember the exposure of the CIA backed Contras and their organised drug trafficking which the Reagan Administration fully admitted.
So what's wrong if somebody exposes such ''failures''. Only when such ''failures'' are exposed will these free countries learn to be more careful in their secret dealings.

Very true William - ALL COUNTRIES - but Assange is hell bent on exposing the dirty laundry of only ONE PART of the world....

This decision was based on the belief that there would be political pressure and interference from America, and that he could be extradited to America, where he could face the death penalty. Hard to believe, well we live in a total democracy where political interference does not take place. And we do not have a death policy/penalty. As for the charges 'he' claims it is a mechanism to get him on route to the USA. where a soldier has been arrested for I believe 800 days.

So - if I or any normal tax payer were to be accused of sexual assault - would we get asylum anywhere? I do not think so!!
So now Mr Assange will go on uncovering free countries' secrets (...I repeat free countries' secrets - not Iran's and other Muslim dictatorship's secrets)... but of course all of a sudden Ecuador and friends will now become excluded fro wikileaks :) :)

...and if some swede accuses a foreign minister of sexual assault , what do you think would happen? thought so.
Oh! and how about Sweden guaranteeing that he will not be sent over to the US if he gets extradited?
'Free countries'? Democracy has become a disgrace across the western world. The western world has become one paranoid freak show with a twisted and very naive view of freedom. Our freedom starts and ends with owning things, everything else is dictated to us.
