Ecuador grants asylum to Assange

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been granted political asylum by Ecuador after taking refuge in the country's embassy in London.

The announcement will increase tensions between the UK and the South American country, which has been warned that the situation could have "serious implications" for diplomatic relations.

Mr Assange sought sanctuary in the embassy in Knightsbridge in an effort to avoid deportation to Sweden, where he faces sexual assault charges.

Ecuadorian ministers have accused the UK of threatening to "attack" the embassy to seize Mr Assange after it emerged that a 1987 law could allow the revocation of a building's diplomatic status if the foreign power occupying it "ceases to use land for the purposes of its mission or exclusively for the purposes of a consular post".

Under international law, diplomatic posts are considered the territory of the foreign nation.

The British Foreign Office has said the decision on Mr Assange's application for political asylum would not affect the UK's legal obligation to extradite him to Sweden.

@ stephen koludrovic

When it comes to serving the one master Sweden or any other country lie down and plays the poodle.

Interesting thing is Assange has not even been charged by the Swedes on the alleged rapes. Ecuador government rquested Sweden to question Assange over the rape matter. Sweden refused to do so. Although previously Sweden Sweden sent an investiing team to Serbia concerning a murder in sweden.
It is but certain the whole game of the US/UK/Sweden is to get Assange to Sweden for the purpose of one single objective to have him extradited to teh USA. Meanwhile it is better for Assange to be literally imprisoned inside the Eduadorian embassy than be undergoing the water boarding in America.

What you believe is irrelevant. Assange is in breach of his bail conditions...he should surrender period.

When you know you are going to suffer the Water boarding in America, then perhaps jumping the bail is merely a simple enduarnce.

Very true William - ALL COUNTRIES - but Assange is hell bent on exposing the dirty laundry of only ONE PART of the world....

...and if some swede accuses a foreign minister of sexual assault , what do you think would happen? thought so.

Oh! and how about Sweden guaranteeing that he will not be sent over to the US if he gets extradited?

'Free countries'? Democracy has become a disgrace across the western world. The western world has become one paranoid freak show with a twisted and very naive view of freedom. Our freedom starts and ends with owning things, everything else is dictated to us.
