Alternattiva Demokratika this morning called for the removal of illegal boathouses in Armier, saying that those who have taken over public land should not be permitted to enjoy the fruits of their crime.
Carmel Cacopardo, AD spokesman on Sustainable Development noted that at a recent press conference MEPA officials stated that the Armier problem was much bigger that what they could handle.
"AD "agrees with this statement and adds that the Armier problem is the result of the direct involvement of those politicians who have been in power for the past 40 years who ignored the continuous abuse of taking over public land and its development," he said.
"Secret meetings were organised on the eve of general elections in order to find a formula so that those who took over public land may retain its possession – this have made the matter much more serious."
He said the Marfa Action Plan published by MEPA for public consultation 10 years ago in 2002 should be decided upon. This Action Plan considers l-Ahrax tal-Mellieha in a holistic manner emphasising the rehabilitation ofthe zone and the need to protect its various aspects. In this action plan MEPA also provides for five zones for the construction of beach rooms which government has already declared that they will be handed over to the company set up by the squatters,Armier Developments Limited.
"AD – The Green Party does not agree that the squatters should be given preferential treatment in any way. The existing boathouses should be demolished and the squatters evicted. The draft Marfa ActionPlan should be amended such that no beach rooms or boathouses are constructed. The coast should be available to all", concluded Mr Cacopardo.
